This week we paired up with professional organizer Julianna Strickland to hear her secrets to a healthy, attractive, and well-organized school lunch! She shared some great nuggets of advice on her blog, and here are some of our favorite tips:

Julianna says that the best lunches will have variety: foods that are sweet, salty, crunchy, soft - you get the idea.  Mix it up every day if you can and your kids will be excited to open their lunchboxes and see the delightful array of foods in there. It's good for you, too! It's been proven that humans who eat a variety of foods are healthier overall.

Frankly, kids like things that look cool! Julianna suggests that you can get away with putting a lot of healthy, fresh food in your kid's lunch, as long as it’s aesthetically pleasing.

That’s where this bento box comes in: it’s stainless steel, dishwasher safe, and eco friendly (no plastic baggies, brown paper bags, or several different pieces). Plus it’s just really neat, and it keeps the food items you pack separated - something your kids will certainly appreciate.

Instead of putting another boring PB&J sandwich in here, Julianna suggests making it more playful by spreading almond butter & organic jelly on a tortilla, folding it in half, and cutting it into triangles. It's healthy, and your kids will agree that it's much cooler than the old version of the sandwich.

Remember how we talked about variety? So we have to include somethign crunchy! Julianna suggests veggie chips because they have that great salty crunch but they’re still fortified with vitamin-rich vegetables. Healthy, tasty, and a nice contrasting texture to the tortilla sandwich.

Julianna speaks truth to a known fact: kids like to dip things. And, she says, that's a foolproof way to get them to eat more veggies. She gives the recipe for her personal favorite greek yogurt ranch dressing, which she suggests including with some carrot sticks or celery for dipping.

Greek Yogurt Ranch Dressing Recipe:

  • 1 cup full fat Greek yogurt (plain)
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 pinch of salt

Combine all ingredients in a mini food processor or blender and store in an airtight container in the fridge.

Finally, finish with something sweet. Julianna suggests sweet fruit cut into bite-sized pieces, and then a few yogurt pretzels for dessert. Healthy and satisfying all at once!

Bonus! Send them along with a cloth napkin and silverware to be truly environmentally-friendly. No more wasted paper or plastic forks! Plus, it'll save you money in the long run. It's a win-win!
